Most geared scooter fans have wished for an extra gear at some time or another. At least one more that their traditionally geared four-speed ride can provide. Tuned motors benefit from additional ratios being added to effectively convert their extra power into an increased top speed and reduced gaps between the gears. A close-ratio gearbox offers these advantages and the original Lambretta versions were known as the 'Pacemaker' and 'Close-ratio' transmissions. They solve the problem of the gaps between the gears being too large, but also reduce the available speed range. Either the top-speed is too low, or the revs required to get going in the first place are too high.
This five-speed transmission conversion kit from CRIMAZ represents an ideal solution to these problems. The gear ratios are grouped closely enough to eliminate large gaps, while the speed range is largely identical to the original DL/GP four-speed gearbox. This enables starting without burning the clutch and the ability to reach, and maintain, a respectable maximum speed with an acceptable rpm.
CRIMAZ recommend a primary drive ratio of 18/47 or 19/46.
The individual gear ratios are : 9/45, 12/41, 14/38, 16/36, 18/35.
The end float of the gear assembly should be adjusted to 0.1mm.
The inner diameter at the rear of the cruciform has been changed to 26.5mm for technical reasons. Check its compatibility with the drive-shaft.
The lay shaft is hollow to improve bearing lubrication.
The cruciform arms are 4.5mm wide (Vespa smallframe – 4mm, largeframe Lusso- 5mm).
A cruciform and strengthened selector spring are included with the kit.
This transmission kit has already been successfully proven during testing and use in the ten hour Magny Cours 2016 endurance race.
